SSKM Fire Under Control, No Casualty Reported


Update: As fresh reports are pouring in, the fire is under control. No casualty has been reported. Fire and Emergency minister Sovan Chaterjee has ordered a probe to look into any sabotage angle. All the patients are safe and moved to another building.

“A permanent fire station will be set up in SSKM.”, said West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, after visiting the spot.

Kolkata:  A major fire broke out at the third floor of Ronald Ross building in SSKM Hospital. Fire tenders have been pressed in to douse the flame. A gas cylinder has reportedly exploded causing panic. The electricity connection of the building has been terminated.

The patients and relatives in the affected building are being evacuated. Panic gripped patients and doctors alike and people can be seen running. TV footage showed flames emanating from the windows of the third floor.

As per reports, a large number of patients were present in the building’s dental and eye section, when the flames broke out. The fire has also spread to the library. Patients and relatives complained that 2 fire trucks arrived at the spot with no ladders and other necessary equipment.

As per fire safety norms, fire engine should have been stationed at the hospital all the time. But the first fire truck arrived half an hour later the flames emerged as per the people.

Although fire tenders reached he spot and are trying to control the blaze, people complained that they are not properly equipped. The cause of the fire is not yet known, a faulty air conditioning machine is likely to be responsible.
