Major Fire Breaks Out At Slum Near Dakshineshwar Temple

Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a slum near the Dakshineshwar temple on Saturday night. 8 fire tenders have been pressed into service.

As per sources, the fire broke out at around 8:30pm. The slum is adjacent to the bally bridge where the fire erupted and have spread to its nearby areas.

The intensity of the fire is such that the entire shanty is gutted in the fire. Fire officials worked on a war footing and doused the flames in one hour.

The cause of fire is still to be determined. The fire officials did not make any comment yet.

However, unconfirmed sources point out that either it was the result of short circuit or due to candle. Major part of the residents use candles at night.

Atleast 25-30 shanties were gutted in the fire. According to the eye-witnesses, the flames could be seen from a huge distance. The police closed the Bally bridge due to the fire. It led to major discomfort for the office people who were returning home. It also led to traffic.

Fire service minister Sujit Bose, TMC MP Sougata Roy and Madan Mitra rushed to the spot soon after getting the news. They have assured shelter and proper light system to those whose houses were completely burnt.
