Maheshtala Assembly By-Poll: Tri-Party Contest, Security Tightened

Maheshtala: All set to start assembly by-poll in Maheshtala constituency on May 28, Monday. The by-poll was necessitated by the death in February of TMC MLA Kasturi Das, who had won the seat in 2011 and 2016.

In a seemingly rare occurrence in Indian politics, where wives usually take over the mantle from their husbands, in Maheshtala, the TMC has nominated Dulal Das, Kasturi’s husband, for the bypolls. The BJP’s candidate is Sujit Ghosh, while Prabhat Chowdhury is fighting for the CPI(M). The Congress has announced its support for Chowdhury.

The Congress has decided to extend support to CPI(M) candidate for the 28 May by-poll to Maheshtala Assembly seat in West Bengal, sparking speculation that the two parties might be coming closer to each other.

The two parties had forged a coalition in Bengal for the 2016 assembly elections but parted ways after the CPI(M) central committee said the alliance was “not in consonance with the party line adopted in 2015”, said source.

The by-poll results for assembly elections will be declared 31 May. Keeping up with its rising prospects in West Bengal, BJP will be looking at gaining more ground in the Maheshtala by-poll while TMC will hope to continue its winning streak. The Maheshtala by-poll has emerged a tight three-way contest between TMC, BJP, and the Congress-CPM alliance, with each candidate wooing voters.
