Madan Mitra To Contest From Bhatpara In By-Polls

Suri: TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee announced candidate for Bhatpara Vidhan Sabha by-elections. Madan Mitra has been named as the candidate in Arjun Singh’s stronghold. Mitra had expressed his wishes to be a candidate in the Lok Sabha elections, but the party did not give him that opportunity. Finally, Banerjee has kept her faith in him and has fielded him from Bhatpara for the by-polls.

Former Bhatpara MP Arjun Singh recently joined BJP after leaving TMC. As a result, the need for by-polls emerged. Already several councilors of Bhatpara Corporation have enlisted their names with Arjun Singh.

In this situation, Banerjee has kept her trust with the old worker of the party. In 2016, Madan Mitra fought in the Vidhan Sabha elections from the jail. Party workers and his family campaigned on behalf of him. However, he could not win. CPM’s Manas Mukherjee had won.

Madan Mitra was jailed for more than a year. After getting bail, he remained in his house for several days. Gradually, he returned to his normal life. On 21st July 2017, he was seen in Dharmatala’s Shahid manch. But controversy erupted after he was not given any space in the dais.

As per the party, Madan Mitra is always known as a fighter and hence he has been fielded against the influential Arjun Singh.
