Kolkata: Former Trinamool MLA Madan Mitra was released on bail after 634 days of his arrest on Friday.
The release was followed by a personal bond of Rs.30 Lakhs to Alipore Court. Mitra has to cooperate with CBI in the process of investigation, thereby making a weekly appearance before the officials. Also he has to submit his passport to the local Police station.
The verdict came a day after Mitra’s counsel submitted a bail plea stating that Mitra is no longer an influential person since he is neither a minister, nor holds an prime position in TMC.
TMC Chief Partha Chatterjee welcomed the decision, says that it is a day of happiness for the party members. He went on to allege that Mitra was unnecessarily held captive for a long time where a murder convict is set free soon. The party, had given Mitra ticket for this year’s Assembly elections from Kamarhati, which he had eventually lost.
Madan Mitra had been in police custody for 22 months for his alleged involvement in the Saradha Chit Fund Scam. Mitra, who was arrested on December 12, 2014, was granted bail by a lower court last year.Eventually he surrendered after his bail plea was rejected in November 2015.
Reportedly, the CBI is to challenge this verdict, in the Calcutta High Court, condemning this move as a case of Contempt of Court. They allege that Madan Mitra can access the witnesses even now and the release can tamper with the Saradha investigation.
