New York: Emergency crews have been called to New York’s financial district after a loud ‘explosion’. The drama happened close to 140 Broadway, with witnesses saying they heard a huge boom across the city.
It is thought to have been a manhole explosion, and no serious injuries are understood to have been reported. New York Times reporter Shane Goldmacher posted on Twitter moments after it happened: “I’m in lower Manhattan and we just heard a very loud sound, akin to an explosion a couple minutes ago. Police active nearby.”
Peter Donald, Assistant Commissioner for Communication and Public Information at the New York City Police Department, posted: “There was a small manhole explosion in front of 53 Nassau Street a few moments ago in Lower Manhattan. There are no serious injuries.”
