Bengaluru: The release of Cauvery river water from dams in Karnataka has sparked outrage among the locals in Mandya in the Cauvery basin. Protestors blocked the traffic on a major highway,almost 100 kms from Bengaluru.
They opposed the Supreme Court’s ruling that Karnataka should release water into Tamil Nadu. Bullock carts and burning tyres have been used to block the roads. The major arterial road between Bengaluru and Mysuru have also been blocked. Security was beefed up in the dams as protests spread across the district. Schools and colleges to remain closed tomorrow.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said: “As a state, we cannot defy the Supreme Court’s orders. Despite severe hardship, we will release water.”
