Kolkata: First professional coach of India and renowned footballer Amal Dutta passed away following age related illness. He was 86. Dutta is survived by son Ashish, daughter Anita, and a host of relatives and friends.
Amal Dutta had represented India in the 1954 Asian Games at Manilla in Philippines. He was suffering from Alzheimer for some time and was bed-ridden due to age related illness. Today morning, following respiratory problems, Dutta was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata, where he passed away around 08.10 pm.
As soon as the news of his demise spread, hundreds of football fans and sports lovers visited the Baguiati residence of Dutta to pay their last homage.
Dutta became well-known for his bold decisions ~ be it on or off the fields. In 1960, he retired from Indian Railways to become a full-time football coach. Thereafter, he went to England and took coaching lessons for a year and came back to join as a coach of the Railways’ football team.
In 1963, he joined East Bengal and remained with the club till 1964. Later, he joined Mohun Bagan where he invented his famous Diamond system of playing. Under this system, the players played in 4-1-2-1-2 formation.
According to Bengal sports minister Arup Biswas, Dutta’s body will be taken to his Ganesh Talkies house near Girish Park from his Baguiati residence at 07.30 am Monday. Thereafter, his mortal remains will be taken to Rabindra Sadan, where it will be kept for public to pay homage from 10 am to 02 pm.
Dutta’s mortal remains will then be taken to Mohun Bagan Club, and from there to the Nimtala Cremation Ghat, where it will be consigned to the flames.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who took to Twitter to pay her condolence wrote:“Saddened at the passing away of Amal Dutta. Football world will miss him. It’s a great loss. My condolences to his family and friends.” She is expected to pay her last respect at Rabindra Sadan before flying off to north Bengal on a five-day tour.
