Kolkata: Legal complications crop up for mayor-in-future Firhad Hakim in becoming the future mayor. A case has been filed at the Calcutta High Court by ward number 75’s CPM Councillor Bilkis Begum.
The case has been filed as a challenge to the Vidhan Sabha bill. It has been filed under HC Justice Debangshu Basak.
Bilkis Begum has alleged that the amendment made to the 1980 KMC Act, is illegal. The councillor said that it is mentioned in the 1980’s law that only municipal worker (both male and female) can be a mayor. This law was amended. But in the 1980’s law, it was also mentioned that no outsider can be elected for the mayor position. In the Vidhan Sabha, the amendment made was that anyone (outsider) can become a mayor but that person will have to win in the democratic process within KMC’s 188 wards. The councillor alleged that this step was not followed. The amended bill has gone to the Governor for his assent.
Biklis Begum at 10:30 on Wednesday morning filed a case in the High Court which has accepted the plea. The hearing is likely on this week itself.
