Leaving Santragachi, now ‘Kolkata Gate’ at Raiarhat

Kolkata: Because Delhi and Mumbai owned India Gate and Gateway of India through their Raj-heritage, why not neo-Kolkattans get one newly? So beyond Kolkata let us have a ‘Kolkata Gate’. As HIDCO has finalized a drawing approved by CM Mamata Banerjee, they are going to construct the Gate at Rajarhat-New Town area.

Debashish Banerjee, chairman of HIDCO said that, the structure will be balanced on four pillars having a round lounge on the top. The gate will also feature the logo of ‘Biswa Bangla’ and ‘Welcome to Kolkata’ will be written on the gate.

The expenses of the construction will be borne by HIDCO. Although the Pune based architectural firm which prepared the drawing sought a height of 100 meters for the gate, approval of the airport authorities is a must as the Rajarhat area is near the Dumdum airport.

As per reports the height of the gate will be finalized as per the airport authority’s permission.
Incidentally, the past LF government had constructed a same type of Gate, courtesy Salim-Siputra, on the other side of the Hugli river near Santragachi-Howrah, to satisfy the same sort of narcissus complex.
