Bhangor: The name of the Bhangar power grid has been already changed to the power sub station. The controversial project of Power-Grid in South 24 Pargana’s Bhangor has stopped on Thursday morning following tremendous disturbance in the locality. On Friday, there was no meeting between the protesters with the administration. The protesters will meet again on December 31 in Baruipur with administrative officials.

Mr. Mirza Hasan, the leader of the land conservation and environment protection committee, said that the work of measuring the land started on Saturday after the Friday meeting. In the presence of the land committee, started the work of measuring the land below the power sub station under the supervision of the government. The government will give compensation of 46 meters of land, 23 meters on both sides, below the electricity line. This is the moral victory of the protesters.

Earlier, Villagers clashed with police at Bhangor in South 24 Parganas over construction of an electric sub-station even as the state government said the work on it has stopped and urged the agitators to sit for talks to restore peace. A senior police officer said the police were attacked by the villagers and a few of them were injured by stones and bricks thrown at them.

To bring the situation under control, police resorted to bursting teargas shells and lathicharge, he said. Villagers on the other hand alleged that the police resorted to unprovoked lathicharge and teargassing.

There was no reason for the protests as the state government has already halted the project following protests by farmers demanding more compensation for their land.
