Kolkata: Kolkata the city of joy has again merged tradition with Bengali’s love of cuisine in a unique style. The Calcutta Tramways Company has launched a new AC tram restaurant as a step to restore the heritage values and rejuvenate the current tramway routes running all across the city. The AC tram is stationed at Esplanade in heart of the city and is finding several takers who wish to enjoy the history and food in a cool way, quite literally.
“A very affordable nice restaurant the tram associations have made. I come here for around an hour during day, take rest and some juices to avoid dehydration in this heat…It’s a nice place to hang out. Whenever I get some leisure time from my work I come here to enjoy heritage in a cool way!” says Aakash Agarwal, a regular visitor to the restaurant.
Not only have the air conditioned trams been modified but there are some other changes brought to the trams in Kolkata to breathe new life into it. “We are very proud that trams are been transformed if not very significantly, yet to a noticeable degree we are renovating the exteriors the bodies, we are introducing air conditioned trams, we are introducing heritage trams which are moving in specific heritage circuits on holidays weekend we are trying to invite the foreign tourists. We are introducing museums in trams, trams can be stationary museums, and trams can be mobile museums.” says Alapan Bandopadhaya , Transport Secretary of West Bengal.
Indeed, Tram lends Kolkata an old world charm and adds to the romantic element to the city. This slow moving, electrical reptile in narrow and crowded streets completes the ultimate attraction of the city .Having glided down the rails as the historian witness; Tram has itself been turned into an immemorial heritage for which even India is and will be proud of.
