Kolkata: A day after West Bengal Education Minister and Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee condemned the incident of ragging, said “strict action” will be taken against anyone found involved in the act, the victim filed an FIR against the accused at the Amherst Street Police Station, Kolkata.
The first-year student, who claimed to be a member of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit of the college that he was subjected to torture by some senior members of the students’ wing on May 17 when he inquired about the expenses incurred for arranging an upcoming fest in the college.
The student was allegedly stripped naked and tortured by former students of St Paul’s college at Armhast Street in Kolkata. On Saturday, when the complainant found that the video had been circulated on social networking site, he lodged a complaint with the college authorities.
The first year student had asked president of the college unit Arnab Ghosh about the functioning of the union fund. And after that a heated verbal exchange ensued between the two and soon some other senior students took Ghosh’s side and then the student was allegedly beaten up and forced him to walk naked.
Feeling humiliated, the victim also allegedly made a failed attempt to end his life.He was only allowed to leave after a warning that he would not inquire about the utilisation of the funds of the students union again.
The education minister further assured that if the student lodges a complaint with the party, it will be investigated. The complainant belongs to the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit at the college itself.
Immediately after Partha Chatterjee’s response, TMCP president Jaya Dutta sought a report on the part of the party unit in the college and said it should be submitted in three days.
“If the allegations were found to be true in the inquiry report of the college, the government will show ‘zero tolerance’ to such misconduct,” he said.
