Kolkata: In what can be called as the joyful news for Kolkata, the City of joy will be hosting the upcoming Under 17 World Cup Final match.
The International Federation of Association Football or FIFA announced on Monday that Kolkata would host the final match on October 28. There had been high speculations since past 24 hours over the venue of the final match of U-17 football World Cup. The Mumbai’s D Y Patil Stadium or the Kolkata’s Yuva Bharati Krirangan were the contending names for the venue.
Finally, FIFA gave its decision in favour of Kolkata. Kolkata would also host a quarterfinal match and 10 other matches at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan.
The committee were on a week-long inspection of the six proposed venues for India’s first ever FIFA tournament, which are New Delhi, Goa, Kochi, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati and Kolkata. The semifinals will be hosted by Guwahati and Navi Mumbai.
Tournament Director of the Local Organising Committee Javier Ceppi said, “It is a happy day for me because all the questions about the match schedule will stop being asked. We can finally focus on other things. It has been an extremely complicated process to finalise the schedule to have a World Cup in India – different festivities, weather patterns, different timelines.”
He added, “We know that October is a month of festivities and we want this to be a festival of football.” The slogan for the tournament was also revealed at the event in Kolkata, which goes – “Football takes over”.
