Kolkata: Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal 2-0 to do a double over their local rivals. Won the first leg in the season 1-0 and were resounding this afternoon. Aser Dicke’s goals the difference in the end.
Mohun Bagan had won the first leg of the I-League clash against local rivals East Bengal by a narrow 1-0 margin and there it was the team in red and gold who squandered many chances. On Sunday, in the return leg, Mohun Bagan emerged victorious once again – to finish a double – and yet they were the ones who let go of many chances.
The final scoreline said 2-0 when the referee blew the final whistle and it could have very well been much worse. Even without the ever-influential Sunny Norde, out injured, Mohun Bagan looked convincing all around. Asier Dicke had a large role to play in that or more specifically his opening goal after 55 seconds did. That tipped the balance in Mohun Bagan’s favour and he made it 2-0 after the half hour.
In the second half, Mohun Bagan had plenty of chances to add to the tally but each time, either Akram or Kadam wasted the opportunity. The win kept East Bengal in third while Mohun Bagan leaped to fourth in hopes of keeping their title challenge alive. Minerva lead the I-League with 22 points from 9 games but have played two games less. NEROCA are second with 21 points from 10 games.
