KOLKATA: On Wednesday the Barrackpore detective wing laid a ‘honey trap’ with the help of a young woman cop and busted a bike-theft racket and arrested four, including the ‘romeo gang leader’ from Kalyani Expressway in North 24 Parganas. They will be produced at Barrackpore court.
First, the woman constable from Jagaddal police station befriended the kingpin over phone and developed a fake relationship for almost a week. Later, she asked the kingpin to meet her with a rose in his hand at a location off the Kalyani Expressway, where the cops had already laid a trap.
As decided, the suspected gang leader, Ananda Mondal, came with a red rose accompanied by his three associates Sayad Ahmed, Asgar Ali and Apurba Das.
They came on two stolen bikes and landed straight in the trap set by the cops. Cops seized both bikes, including 45kgs of ganjas from the gang. According to cops, they came to know about the gang few months back after some bikes were stolen from Jagaddal and Kanchrapara area.
“Initially we received information that the gang comprised some local criminals. We first managed to track down a receiver-cum-motorbike workshop owner in Jagaddal, where the gang sold off two stolen bikes in recent past. After interrogating him, we got the contact details of one of the gang members,” said K Karnan, DCP-1, Barrackpore commissionerate.
According to a police sources, the officers gave the woman cop a new SIM card and asked her to strike up a casual conversation with Mondal. “She befriended him and both used to speak for hours. Later, the constable pretended she had developed feelings for him. After a week, the constable asked him to meet her,” a senior police officer said.
