Manchestar: India defeated England by eight wickets in the first T20 International at Old Trafford in Manchester on Tuesday. The emphatic victory came on the back of top performances from Kuldeep Yadav and KL Rahul.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the Toss and elected to chase on a pitched that looked like a batsman’s paradise. England got off to a rollicking start thanks to openers Jason Roy and Jos Buttler. The match turned on it’s head, though, thanks to a phenomenal spell of wrist spin from Kuldeep Yadav. The chinaman bowler picked up a five-for, running through the English middle-order. The hosts eventually got to 159/8 in their 20 overs, as Buttler top-scored with 69 from 46.
India’s chase got off to a horror start, with Shikhar Dhawan getting clean-bowled in the first over. However, it was a Rahul show all the way from thereon. The right-hander played a masterful knock, scoring an unbeaten 101 off 54 ti guide his team home.
Both teams came into the series in solid form. While India had good practice in their series sweep against Ireland, England destroyed Australia to send out a strong statement. Ireland might not have proved to be a match for India, but the three-match T20 series against England will surely give a fair idea of where the tourists stand ahead of the tougher tests that’ll come over the next couple of months.
