New Delhi: The alleged kidnap of Vinay Mahajan, an Indian student from Punjab, in Belgrade has turned out to be fake.

Union external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj who got the matter investigated when she was informed about the ‘kidnap’ by Rajeev Sharma, the brother of Vinay, informed the facts late on Thursday night on Twitter.

Rajeev Sharma had posted a video where his brother was shown to be tortured by a ‘kidnapper’ demanding ransom from the family.

“I have all the facts before me. Your brother was not abducted. He stage-managed his own abduction and the video is fake. The Indian Embassy in Serbia has intervened and your brother has been released by Serbian Police. He is returning on 25 March,” Sushma Swaraj said.
