Dhaka: In a show of reconciliation BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has invited Awami League president and arch rival Sheikh Hassina to an Iftar party. The party for politicians at the International Convention City in the capital’s Bashundhara is scheduled for Sunday.
A BNP delegation led by its spokesperson and International Affairs Secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon handed the invitation at the Awami League chief’s Dhanmondi office on Monday.
The ruling party’s Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das and Assistant Office Secretary Abdul Majid received the invitation. The BNP spokesperson later told reporters that they hope the prime minister will attend the party.
“We hope that politicians meeting up at such a social event would send a positive message to the people”, said Ripon. The head of the two largest political parties have not met for quite some time now, but both of them exchange greeting cards during Eid and invite each other for Iftar parties every year.
