New Delhi: The craze for vegetarian options has become so popular that now even KFC is getting in on the game – and launching a MEAT-FREE ‘fried chicken’.
The global fast food chain – best known for its ‘finger licking’ chicken wings – says it just can’t ignore the trend.
In what is likely to be hailed as great news by vegetarian and vegan eaters alike, KFC is planning on introducing its own ‘meat-free’ versions of its famous dishes so that it can accommodate all of its customers.
KFC says it intends to create its own version of meatless fried chicken, with promises of “great taste” – as it will still be coated in the fast food’s signature blend of 11 herbs and spices.
The vegetarian chicken will offer the “great taste of KFC to new and existing customers who are changing their dining habits”, the chain said.
It comes alongside plans to reduce the number of calories in its meals by 20% over the next seven years.
KFC also plans to develop a new menu featuring meals with less than 600 calories over the same time frame.
A staggering 1,430 calories sit in a single Big Daddy Meal- that is 60% of the recommended amount for a man’s daily intake and 80%of an adult woman’s.
The plans also come amid a clampdown by the Public Health England on the number of calories in popular foods.
It intends to slash this by 20% by 2024. A spokesman told SunOnline that “development of the recipe is still in its very early stages, and so the options we’re exploring in our kitchen are still top secret.”
