July 26 is Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day etched in history remembering the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the Kargil War in 1999. Kargil Vijay Diwas was named after the Operation Vijay. India finally defeated Pakistan in the war which lasted three months. Pakistani infiltrators had crept inside Indian territory taking up strategic positions at higher altitudes. And this forced India to begin operation Vijay to weed out Pakistanis who had captured Tiger Hills among others in Kargil.
On 7th July 1999, heavy shelling began from the peaks 7,8,4 and 5. Enemies sitting at the top of the hill was adding fuel to this conflict. The enemies provoked the Indian soldiers saying “Possessing the name Sher Shah will not prove you brave, if you have enough courage then come and fight face to face.” The confidence of the enemies sitting on the peak was so strong that they said, “Sher Shah, give us Madhuri Dixit and we will go away without fighting.”
Soon after this verbal conflict,Sher Shah continued to retaliated with his weapons and annihilated some enemies. Then Sher Shah smiled and said, ‘With love from Madhuri Dixit!’
Who was Sher Shah?
Sher Shah was a brave soldier,the Param Veer Chakra winner and martyred Captain Vikram Batra. who man was the champion of the Kargil war, the victor He was known as Sher Shah for his bravery.
Many soldier lost their life and many were alive with the reminiscent of the Kargil war,number of Indian soldiers earned awards for gallantry. Soldiers who were martyred have become immortal as their names will always shine in history. 18 years ago on July 26, 1999, India declared operation Vijay a success.Since then, this day is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
But how did the war started ? How did Pakistan’s attempt to hurt India failed? How did the Indian Air Force showing their courage foiled the Pak army’s intentions and force them enemy to back down? Which country,had come forward to help India by ignoring America’s pressure? And what were the methods that the Indian Air Force executed on the battleground?
On May 3, 1999, about 200 kilometers away from Srinagar,Pakistan infiltrators atop heights of Kargil and strategic heights taken over by them were reported. Two countries came face to face for war showing their nuclear power. And finally the war broke out. On 26th May, the enemies started heavy shelling, and the Indian army retaliated to it.This operation was named ‘Operation Vijay’.
When the Chinese army attacked an Indian air force aircraft with the help of a Chinese missile, the air force was determined only for the counter attack. From the border, the air force answered every attack. Indian Air Force MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-27, destroyed the enemy supply chain. In this war, the most challenging of India was to identify enemy bases and destroy it.
When the Pakistan armies attacked an Indian aircraft with the help of a Chinese missile, the Indian Air Force was then determined for the counter attack.The Indian Air Force without crossing the border retaliated at every attack of the enemies.Indian Air Force launches air strikes. Flying from the Indian airfields of Srinagar, Avantipur and Adampur, ground attack aircraft MiG-21s, MiG-23s, MiG-27s, Jaguars and the Mirage 2000 strike insurgent positions.Indian aircraft MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-27, destroyed the enemy supply chain. In this war, the most challenging of India was to identify enemy bases and destroy it.
During the Kargil war India didn’t have the advanced missiles.And it was the time when a country ignoring the US pressure extended it’s hand for helping India.This country had always showed unconditional support for India.And the country was Israel,during the 1971 war Israel had handed over all it’s weapons to India which were made for Iran.Similarly,in 1999 Kargil war Israel has proved to be real well wisher of India. Israel has always helped India by supplying arms and ammunitions.
On 4th July 1999, after eleven hours of war, the IAF soldiers appreared holding the national flag on the most important peak ‘Tiger hill’ . Nawaz Sharif was forced to pull-out of Pakistani troops.This is how the Kargil war came to an end and India announced complete eviction of Pakistani troops. On 14th July 1999, then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced the success of ‘Operation Vijay’.But the victory of the Kargil war was officially declared on 26th July 1999 by the Indian Army.
In the Kargil war about 3,000 Pakistan infiltrators were killed. Officially about 527 Indian soldiers were martyred.Remembering the sacrifices of such soldiers, their valour and courage Kolkata24x7 salute them. Jain Hind!
