Kakdwip Couple Murder Case: 8 Arrested, Police’s Role Questioned

Baruipur: The police arrested eight more people accused in the murder of the CPM couple at Kakdwip during the Panchayat polls.

Prior to Wednesday’s arrest, CPM cadre Vidyut Halder from Telengana was arrested.
After interrogating him, these eight were arrested. However, the CPM has raised questions about the police’s role in the arrests. The CPM party blamed the police of playing dirty games for protecting the miscreants belonging to the TMC party.

The police, during investigation, said that the fire was due to short circuit. According to the police, the couple was burnt to death through short circuit. Investigation also revealed that it was not the TMC party, but a factional feud in CPM that killed the old-aged couple.

Rejecting claims by police, South 24 Parganas’ CPM district president Shamik Lahiri said, “The police is working as a servant of the TMC and trying to hide the murderers of Kakdwip’s Debu Das and Usharani Das. Instead of arresting the accused, the police is arresting innocent villagers.” The CPM also said that the names of those arrested were not in the accused list.
