New Delhi: The ball was set rolling on Tuesday for the appointment of Jagdish Singh Khehar as the next Chief Justice of India with the present incumbent T S Thakur naming him his successor.
As per the memorandum of procedure, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had written to Justice Thakur to name his successor in November. Justice Thakur responded by naming his number two as the next CJI.
Justice Khehar, 64, will be the 44th Chief Justice of India and will take up office on January 4.
Justice Khehar was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge in September 2011. He has held office as the Chief Justice of Karnataka and Uttarakhand High Courts.
