Jharkhand: In a set back for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Jharkhand, the saffron party on Thursday lost Silli Assembly bypoll. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Sima Mahto won the bypoll by over 13,000 votes.
The bypoll in Silli was necessitated after sitting MLA Amit Mahto of the JMM was convicted in a criminal assault case in March.
JMM’s Seema Devi Mahto Wins Silli, Babita Devi Bags Gomia. JMM candidate Seema Mahto bagged over 77000 votes whereas, AJSU’s Sudesh Mahto got around 63000 votes.
The JMM has surged ahead after pushing the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to second and third place respectively. The by-polls in both Gomia and Silli Assembly seats, falling in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) area, were necessitated following the conviction of their respective JMM MLAs, Yogendra Mahto and Amit Mahto.
Gomia is in Bokaro district while Silli is in Ranchi district. There are 13 candidates and 10 contestants in Gomia and Silli constituencies respectively.
