Jammu: A Commanding Officer of Rashtriya Rifles was killed in a gunfight in north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Sources , the Colonel, who was leading the battle, was critically wounded in Behak forests of Hihama Kupwara, some 125 km from here, at around 1 pm after militants hiding in the forest began firing indiscriminately.
The officer later died of bullet wounds in the Army hospital. The encounter is still underway close to the Line of Control, according to the latest reports.
The Army Special Operation Group of J&K Police and para commandos have been searching the area since Friday morning after they got reports of the presence of militants in the wooded area. Three soldiers and an officer have been injured since the operation began.
Two or three militants are believed to be hiding in the dense forest area after they sneaked into Kashmir almost a fortnight ago, sources said.
