Jamat calls nationwide strike on Monday

Dhaka: The Jamat-e-Islami has called a 24 hour nayionwide strike on Monday, protesting the execution of 1971 war criminal and assistant secretary-general of Jamaat-e-Islami Muhammad Kamaruzzaman by Bangladesh government on April 11.

Kamaruzzaman was hanged to death at Dhaka central jail on Saturday night around 10:00 pm. His body was later taken to Sherpur by police and was handed over to his relatives.

He lost his final bid to overturn his death sentence for atrocities committed during the 1971 independence war, clearing the way for his execution.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in May 2013 sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death for committing crimes against humanity siding with the Pakistani troops during the 1971 liberation war.
