Jalpaiguri Engineering College: Allegation Of Ragging, Students Protest Continues


Jalpaiguri: Students of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC) locked all entrances to the institution since Friday morning and didn’t let the principal, teachers and other staff in. Picture is still same inside the campus in Saturday morning.

They are alleging that a teacher assaulted two second-year students on Thursday evening when they had an altercation with some first-year students. 200 students have been detained inside college. An allegation of ragging raised against the senior student. Allegedly, the senior students have forced first year students to attend the protest.

Senior district police personals have reached the spot.The incident has involved local resident. Area under police lens to avoid any kind of harassment.Police said is under control.

In Friday morning, the agitated studnt of college.locked all gates, except the main one. As the principal and other teachers asked students to withdraw the blockade, the agitators demanded that Dipak Kumar Kole, the accused teacher, be removed from the institution.

The students said two groups had altercation over a football on Thursday evening.
“We had resolved the issue but suddenly, two teachers intervened. Among them was Dipak Kumar Kole, head of Computer Science Engineering. He assaulted two second year students. This led to protests and even the police were called,” a student said.

The duo, allegedly assaulted by the teacher, has been identified as Sumit Kumar and Soumya Bhattacharya). Both of them have sustained injured, the students said.
The police reached the campus and could manage to send the students to their hostels and homes.

Around 10am, the students squatted in front of the college, holding placards and shouting slogans. Later in the evening, the police intervened and the students agreed to sit for talks. No decision however, has been taken so far.
