Irom Sharmila To Seek Solitude In Kerala


Imphal: Rights crusader Irom Sharmila, who had in the aftermath of the Manipur polls announced her decision to quit politics, will reach the tribal village of Attappadi in Kerala on Tuesday for a month-long retreat. She is expected to stay at the Santhi Medical Information Centre promoted by social worker Uma Preman.

The 44-year-old will erach Bangalore on Monday evening  will fly to Coimbatore on Tuesday and go to Attappadi, which is nearly a one hour drive by road from the airport. Irom, who barely leaves Manipur has chosen Attapadi for her quiet retreat after the recent turn of events.

The Iron lady of Manipur, who has vowed to continue her fight against the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act had ended her 16 year-old fast to enter electoral politics. She had faced a crushing defeat at Thoubal constituency against three time Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of the Congress on Saturday.

Irom Sharmila managed to get just 90 votes compared to Okram Ibobi Singh’s 18,649 votes. She had contested the elections under the banner of the People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA).
