A senior Iranian official says Iran and Russia have made no changes to their policies on Syria, saying the two countries will continue their “effective” support for the Arab nation’s fight against terrorism.

“Terrorists have not been allowed to overthrow Syria’s political system and its legal president [Bashar al-Assad] and to turn Syria into a new Libya,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said, Press TV reported.

Syria has been grappling with a destructive foreign-sponsored crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by the ISIL Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of an estimated 230,000 people, according to reports.

While nearly four million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis, more than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Amir-Abdollahian further said China also shares a common stance on supporting Syria’s fight against terrorism and helping the Syrian people.

Iran, China and Russia “support sustainable stability and security in the region,” the Iranian official pointed out.
