Investment Drought Recedes, China to Invest in Bengal


Andal: The Bengal cabinet sub-committee on industries and infrastructure today approved a proposal to set up a bus assembly unit at the industrial park set up by the Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL) in Burdwan’s Andal. The company is planning to produce 1,500 buses annually, the source added

The project will be a joint venture between BAPL and Zhongtong, a Chinese public sector undertaking and will be set up over an area of 15 acres.
Minister said on the meeting that Zhongtong will form a joint venture company soon and the work will start by December this year.

“In the first phase, a sum of Rs 250 crore will be invested. Later on the amount of investment can go up to Rs 1,500 crore,” said the minister. Sources said Zhongtong would bring in buses, which are 80 per cent complete, from China and the rest would be assembled here. In future,localization will go up as more parts are made locally. Incidentally, this is the Chinese company’s second venture in India.
