New Delhi: 50 years old, working 12 hours a day, mother of eight, and living on the outskirts of Delhi – these are only some of the things that begin to describe this person.
Not expecting much and working nonstop through the week, Shanti Devi didn’t plan it this way but has possibly become India’s only woman mechanic, one who doesn’t shy away from lifting tyre trucks and whatever else rolls in, when she’s at her automobile workshop at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar (SGTN) in Delhi.
There’s also a tea stall here which she co-owns with her husband Ram Bahadur. She loves what’s she doing and is happy about the day she decided to move from Madhya Pradesh more than 20 years ago.
“I love my job. It’s hard, but I’d be bored if I sat at home and did nothing,” Shanti explained in an interview with Gulf News. “Looking back, I can say that it has been an absolutely worthwhile experience. It does not bother me when people say that I must be one of the only female truck mechanics in India – I am proud of this,” she added.
