India’s Oldest Rajdhani Express To Turn 50


Kolkata: Pride of Indian Railways, high-speed train Kolkata-Delhi Rajdhani Express will step into its 50th year of journey on March, 2019. The Railway ministry said that grand celebration has been planned on its Golden Jubilee. The programme will be organsied in Howrah.

March, 3 will mark 50th anniversary of Rajdhani Express. The luxurious Howrah Rajdhani Express began operations on 3rd March, 1969. The train departed from the New Delhi railway station to reach the Howrah Junction railway station in 17 hours 20 mins, covering a distance of 1,451 km. The express train reduced the travel time from Delhi to West Bengal from an earlier 24 hours to 17 hours.

At 5:00 pm on March 3, 1969, Guard S O Levy signalled to driver G L Tocher to begin the first-ever journey of the Rajdhani from Howrah to Delhi. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, which is responsible for catering on board the Rajdhani, lined up a special menu for the passengers.

The catering manager in first Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani Express was Ratanchandra Chandra, his son Debashis Chandra is presently employed as General Manager of IRCTC (East).Debashish Chandra took us through a elaborated experience where he stated that Fish Fry of Rajdhani Express was a famous dish among people. Ratanchandra Chandra used to fix the menu for the passengers keeping in mind the repeatation of food. The senior Chandra used to offer logenze while greeting the passengers. Now 24 pairs of Rajdhani Express are on service accross India.

With a touch of contemporary, Rajdhani has been upgraded with passengers’ comfort, security, food quality. The Railways Ministry has allowed fifty lakh to re-model the trains.
