In A First, SC Issues Contempt Notice To Calcutta HC Judge


New Delhi: Supreme Court, in a first, issues contempt notice to Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan after taking suo motu cognisance of its contempt. Karnan had written to PM accusing judges of corruption.

AG Mukul Rohatgi terms public communications of Justice CS Karnan as “slanderous” and “disparaging” to system of administration of justice.

We must be as careful as we can, says SC, adding that it has to be established whether Justice CS Karnan wrote those communications.

SC directs Justice C S Karnan to be personally present before it on Feb 13 to defend himself in suo motu contempt proceeding initiated by it.

Seven judge bench of Supreme court issues contempt notice to Calcutta HC Judge CS Karnan, initiating suo moto criminal proceedings. Justice CS Karnan is also directed to return all judicial & administrative files in his possession to Registrar General of Calcutta HC.
