Jalpaiguri: Three youths were arrested on Sunday night for allegedly selling illegal lotteries in Jalpaiguri.

Manohar Mohammad, Aas Mohammad and Mustafiq Mohammad were arrested on Sunday night from Rangdhamali area under Kotoyali police station in Jalpaiguri. All the three accused are residents of Uttar Pradesh. The police have seized things which would have been provided to lottery winners. They have been presented in the Jalpaiguri’s district sessions court on Monday.

According to sources, the three accused had been involved in illegal lottery business since many days in areas around Ghatiler in Siliguri. The police arrested them from Rangdhamali. The locals have accused that they used to charge Rs. 1500 for a single lottery ticket. But the things that were advertised were not received after winning the lottery.

On the other hand, the gifts that were given were of low quality. A local, Shyamal Mandal said that, “Items such as ceiling fans, pressure cookers and several other things that were being given as rewards had a market price of only Rs. 500. Simultaneously, the quality of the products is extremely poor. We presume that we were being cheated.”

IC of Kotoyali police station, Ashis Roy said, “The accused could not show legal documents for their lottery business. Many items were seized from them. A case has been filed against all the accused and they have been produced in the court.”
