Kharagpur: The premier institute of Engineering in India, IIT Kharagpur has decided to go beyond engineering and will be soon starting Medical courses as well. A 400 bedded super-speciality hospital will soon be set up on a three acre plot on the edge of the campus which will be known as Dr BC Roy Institute of Medical Science and research. The institute will be ready by the end of 2017.
The government has already sanctioned a grant of Rs 230 crore last year for the purpose. According to IIT Kharagpur director Partha Pratim Chakraborty, the construction work will be starting soon and is expected to be completed within 26 months. The institute has sought the approval of the Medical Council of India for setting up the college and providing undergraduate medical courses.
IIT kharagpur will be the first of the IITs all around India to venture into the medical education. Apart from serving the local people the hospital will also work on biomedical, clinical and translational research.
