IIT Kharagpur Students Launched Agitation Against Fee Hike

Medinipore: The students of IIT Kharagpur have launched an indefinite agitation against exorbitant hike in tuition fee in the current semester and over other demands and it also continued on Wednesday.

Holding placards, the students took to a demonstration in front of the director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti’s officer gate since Tuesday noon. By evening the agitators made it to the corridor leading to the director’s chamber, demanding that he must talk to them over their demands.

Until late this evening, the students were demonstrating there with no signs from the institute authorities to sort out the matter. There are at least 300-400 students who are holding fort at the agitation; eight of them have also launched a huger fast.

The agitating students alleged that while IIT Kharagpur usually hikes the tuition fee by about Rs 2,000 every semester, this time the fee has been increased by about Rs 8,000.

This apart, students are being forced to opt for a uniform meal at the hostel mess and Rs 95 is being charged for every such meal plus the applicable taxes. The students further alleged that while in all institutes of higher education, research scholars were given house rent allowance, the same was being deprived at IIT Kharagpur.
