Kolkata: IIT Kharagpur has launched a certificate programme designed to attract PhD-degree holders who are attached to industry or academia and cannot pursue further research for want of time or opportunities.
In a significant stride towards offering an opportunity to professionals with doctoral degrees in India and abroad to pursue impactful research, IIT Kharagpur on Tuesday formally launched a certificate programme that can be pursued side by side with a person’s professional engagement.
The programme – Certificate of Excellence in Research (CER) – is likely to start in July with around 50 students. The course duration will vary between two and six years.
IIT director Parthapratim Chakrabarti said the idea behind the programme was to tap those willing to do “post-doctoral research and initiate them to the world of high-end, open-ended research”.
Professionals with doctoral degrees in engineering, science, management, medicine or humanities/social sciences – from India or abroad – can apply to join the programme. The institute has a department of humanities and social sciences.
“The proposal will have to be endorsed by the technical review committee of the institute. The unique feature of the programme, which distinguishes it from post-doctoral fellowship programmes, is that a candidate can pursue the research even while continuing with his or her professional commitments,” said Sunando Dasgupta, faculty-in-charge, CER.
“Those pursuing the programme from abroad can make the presentation through videoconferencing,” said Prasanta Kumar Das, dean, postgraduate studies and research, IIT Kharagpur.
“Unlike a post-doctoral fellowship course, the IIT programme will award the candidates a certificate,” Das said.
