Hundreds feared dead, as boat capsizes off Libya


Tripoli: Hundreds are feared dead after a migrant boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the Libyan coast, the UNHCR has said. Carlotta Sami, spokesperson of the UN refugee agency told the Skytg24 news channel that only 28 people had survived the shipwreck.

A boat carrying up to 700 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea, the Italian coastguard says.

A major rescue operation is under way after the vessel carrying “between 500 and 700 migrants” capsized at midnight local time, south of the Italian island of Lampedusa.

So far 28 people have been rescued.

Earlier this week, four hundred people are feared to have drowned when their vessel capsized north of Libya.

Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat tweeted that the boat so far only a few can be rescued and other are feared to have succumbed to the tragedy.
