Hindu Religious Leader Arrested For Blasphemous Comment On Facebook


Dhaka: Bangladesh Police arrested a leader of Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajote, in a case filed under the ICT Act for posting derogatory comment about Prophet Hazrat Muhammad on social media site Facebook.

Rakesh Roy, a district unit leader was arrested after Fujayel Ahmed, a leader of Chhatra Jamiat, filed the case against Roy on Monday afternoon under section 57(2) of the act.

Roy had posted a comment on Facebook degrading Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pubh) a few days back.

Sylhet’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Suggayan Chakma said at a press conference that  Rakesh was arrested from Lalakhal in Jaintiapur upazila on Wednesday.

He said that a screenshot of the ‘objectionable’ post about the prophet Muhammad (S), from Rakesh’s Facebook account was spread across the social media platform. This lead to  protests and processions in Jakiganj demanding the arrest of Roy.

Suggayan Chakma said Rakesh was produced in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Khairul Amin of Jakiganj seeking seven-day remand appeal for interrogation. The court granted four-day remand after the hearing.
