Kolkata: The West Bengal state government has suffered another setback in Calcutta High Court on Friday. The court lashed out at the State Election Commission how they ordered repoll in 11 booths of Bidhannagar and Asansol Municipal Corporation.
The court stated that the question about the constitutional jurisdiction of the State Election Commission and the power of the state government to dictate the very body is already under the scanner. A petition about the matter is already submitted to the bench. When it is already under the judicial radar, how could the newly appointed interim State Election Commissioner could give the order to re-poll ?
The October 3 Municipal polls in Bidhannagar, Bali and Asansol has been termed as a farce by opposition amid utter violence and rigging allegedly orchestrated by ruling Trinamool government. Former State Election Commissioner Sushantaranjan Upadhyay was forced to resign after he postponed the vote counting amid opposition outcry.
