Mumbai: Barely an hour after a special court in Mumbai junked the anticipatory bail plea of Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand, the couple was granted two weeks of anticipatory bail by the Bombay High Court on Friday.
Teesta and her husband have been accused by the Gujarat government of embezzling funds meant for the victims of the Gujarat riots in 2002. Teesta, has repeatedly denied the allegations, accusing the Centre and the BJP-run Gujarat government of vendetta for her work with the victims of the 2002 riots.
Last week, the Gujarat government had alleged before the Supreme Court that the activist and her husband Javed Anand had embezzled the funds for “wine and other lifestyle luxuries” and accused the couple of not cooperating in the investigation and tampering with evidence in the case.In an affidavit filed before the apex court, the Gujarat government said, “Teesta Setalvad and her husband misappropriated funds of charity for personal nature like wine and luxury.”
The Gujarat government moved the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of interim bail to the activist and her husband. The government’s latest move against the couple came for alleged non-cooperation with police in the investigation of alleged misuse of funds collected by NGO Sabrang Trust to set up a museum at Gulbarga Society.
