Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has directed the police to register FIR against a brother of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly grabbing the land of another man at Kalighat area in the city.
Justice Jaymalya Bagchi issued the directive today after Ranjan Hazra and his brother Deepak of Harish Chatterjee Street filed a petition over the land grab and alleging that police were not taking his complaint.
Justice Bagchi has asked the Kalighat police station, under whose jurisdiction comes the area, not only to registered an FIR against Ajit Banerjee, but also submit a probe report to the court after the Durga Puja vacation from 25 September – 21 October.
Ajit Banerjee is the eldest brother of the Chief Minister and lives at Harish Chatterjee Street, next to her residence. The legal hassle that Ajit Banerjee has got entangled pertains to a plot on 12 and 13 Harish Chatterjee Street that have been under the occupancy of the Hazras for decades. They have been running a garage on the plot.
But on 2 August, some people forayed into the garage and dismantled the boundary wall claiming that the plot belongs to Ajit Banerjee. The next day they erected a new boundary wall, put up a board declaring that the plot belongs to the Chief Minister’s brother and also posted security guards at the gate to stop the Hazras from entering.
Despite repeated pleas, police allegedly did not take complaints from Hazra, instead threatened him. This made them move the High Court.
