HC lashes at Mamata government: potato crisis

Kolkata: Refuting the state government’s claim that the potato crisis has subsided and situation is stable now, the Division Bench of Justice Manjula Chellur, slammed Mamata government on Friday, asking “If there is no problem, than why the farmers are in court?”

Hearing a PIL filed in connection with the ongoing potato crisis in the state, the High Court expressed disgust and directed the state to initiate steps to alleviate the problem.

Several potato farmers have committed suicide recently over a plummeting market for potatoes. The farmers deep to the neck in loans went bankrupt after the market price slumped due to over production.
