Kolkata: Sexual abuse of school children are increasing daily nationwide. Calcutta High Court Justice Nadira Patheriya expressed disappointment over the case related to safety of school students. According to rules, the schools have to follow the guidelines on safety laid down by the Centre and the State.
But in reality, it is not followed by all schools. The Justice instructed additional solicitor general to submit a report on the guidelines followed by CBSE and Delhi board schools on child safety, by Thursday.
Last year, GD Birla School was in headlines over the sexual abuse of a child. The police arrested two accused teachers. The court appointed a person who will monitor the safety of students in different schools.
Firoz Edulji, appointed by the court, submitted a report after monitoring the schools. He convened a meeting where the Secretary of school council was summoned.
But he did not attend the meeting. Tuesday was the hearing on this case. The Justice praised the State’s intervention in the issue.
In the hearing, the state’s additional advocate general said that in February the education department published guidelines. But the schools under CBSE and Delhi boards were kept out of its purview. After this, the HC summoned additional solicitor general Koushik Chandra.
The court suggested that on this issue, the state and centre must work together.
