Have No Intentions of Becoming FIFA President: Pele

Kolkata: Ruling out any possibility of becoming FIFA president, football legend Pele on Monday said that he had no intention of running for the post. The 74-year-old said so while replying to a question during a press conference in Kolkata.

Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly, who is himself a big football fan, welcomed Pele on behalf of all the Indian fans.

The ‘Black Pearl’ is back in India 38 years after he had enthralled football fans with his team New York Cosmos in a 2-2 draw against local powerhouse Mohun Bagan in an exhibition match way back in 1977.

After his stay in Kolkata, Pele would head to the national capital Delhi on Wednesday evening where he will witness the Subroto Cup final on October 16.

FIFA has been in crisis since May, when US authorities announced charges against 14 officials and sports marketing executives over bribery allegations amounting to more than $US150 million ($A206 million).

In the latest development, Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini, two of the most influential men in world footbal of late, were suspended for 90 days from all football related matters by the organisation’s ethics committee on charges of corruption.

The duo has denied any wrongdoing and have lodged appeals against the sanction.
