Hardik Patel Detained, Internet Services Suspended in Surat

Surat: Gujarat Police on Sunday detained Patidar Ananmat Anodolan Samiti convenor Hardik Patel in Surat ahead of ‘Ekta Yatra’. The local administration has suspended Internet services in Surat for 24 hours.

Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana tells PTI: “We detained Hardik Patel along with his 35 supporters from Mangadh chowk in Varachha area of the city ahead of their rally today. They were detained in the interest of law and order as they did not seek any permission from the state authorities to take out this rally.”

Surat Police has taken Patel, along with 78 protesters, to the police headquarters.

After his arrest, the Patidar convener said that both Gujarat government and the Police are trying to create unrest in the state.

The Gujarat government had on Friday denied permission to Hardik Patel-led ‘Ekta Yatra’ scheduled for Saturday, even as the Patel quota agitation leader remained adamant to go ahead with the march “at any cost”.

In past two weeks, Hardik had announced to take out the “reverse Dandi March” twice, but cancelled the plan after the district administration denied permission to them.

“We have denied permission to (Hardik Patel) to take out the rally tomorrow in the larger interest of law and order situation,” Navsari district collector R M Muthudath said.
