New Delhi: A seven-year-old boy, Pradyuman Thakur, was on Thursday found dead inside the washroom of the Gurgaon-based Ryan International School. The Class II boy’s body was discovered by a fellow school student at around 8 am in the morning – Pradyuman was found with his throat slit and a knife near his body.
“The students alerted the teachers and the school management then informed police, who rushed him to Artemis Hospital. He was declared brought dead by doctors,” Ravinder Kumar, PRO Gurgaon Police, said earlier today.
Late in the night, news agency PTI reported that the Gurgaon Police had arrested a bus conductor, identified as Ashok Kumar, employed by Ryan International School. PTI reported police as saying that Pradyuman’s killer attempted to sexually abuse the boy before killing him.
Earlier in the day, the parents, who led a protest march to the Gurgaon Police headquarters, refused to take back Pradyuman’s body. A teary-eyed Varun Thakur, Pradyuman’s father, was seen speaking to senior police officers at the headquarters, asking why no action has yet been taken. A video of the father speaking at the headquarters was shared by news agency
The Gurgaon Police, which registered a case of murder, questioned around ten people, including a school bus driver, conductor and other staff, through the day. A Gurgaon Police official had earlier said that prima facie, Pradyuman’s death did not seem to be accidental. The first call was received by the police at around 8.30 am.
The DCP of Gurugram Police told India Today, “A complaint has been filed based on deceased’s father complaint. Relevant sections of IPC 302 [relating to murder] and Arms Act are included. Few people are being questioned to get a proper sequence of event. We are examining all evidence including CCTV.”
Earlier, a police team, including forensic experts, collected blood sample and finger prints from the washroom where Pradyuman’s body was found. A knife with blood stains was also recovered from the spot, Gurgaon Police spokesperson Ravinder Kumar said.
Around 8.30 pm today, Ryan School International released a press statement on Pradyuman’s death. The school said it was “saddened by the tragic incident”.
“He had suffered critical injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital by the school head – Mrs Neerja Batra. Despite all attempts, unfortunately his life couldn’t be saved due to the extent of his injuries,” the school said.
The school went on to say that it has assured authorities of all help in the matter. “The Police is investigating this matter and we have assured our full support and co-operation towards the investigation of the same. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be dealt with appropriate action. Our hearts and prayers are with the family,” the statement read.
Earlier in the day, the parents of Pradyuman refused to accept the boy’s body and led a protest march to the Gurgaon Police commissioner’s office. The parents, accompanied by other protesters, demanded that police solve the murder at the earliest and immediately arrest the killers. The protesters also demanded that police register a case against Ryan International School.
