Cairo: Gunmen armed with rocket propelled grenades attacked several military checkpoints in Egypt’s Sinai region killing 15 soldiers and civilians.
Although no one has yet claimed the responsibility of the attacks but IS hand is being suspected behind the attacks as militants belonging to the group have previously carried out similar operations in the Sinai Peninsula.
The Sinai based militants have already killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the army toppled President Mohammad Morsi in 2013.
Some 19 civilians and 19 security men were injured in the attacks carried out by unidentified militants during which they used machine guns and rockets.
Later the military air forces launced raids on extrimists hideouts at Al-Hadaida and Al-Fitat towns and killed around 40 militants.
15 suspects were arrested during security raids in Sheikh Zuweid and Egypt-Gaza border city of Rafah.
