Gunman Enters Istanbul Hospital, Takes Hostages

Istanbul:  Turkish media reports say an armed man is holding a number of doctors and other staff as hostages at a hospital in Istanbul.

The Hurriyet newspaper says Wednesday the gunman is believed to be a patient at the psychiatric unit of Istanbul’s Cerrahpasa hospital and has locked into a room. It says police have been dispatched to the scene.

Officers are said to be negotiating with the man who has threatened to kill himself and others, they said.

Patients and staff have been evacuated from Cerahpasa hospital.

The incident comes amid tension in Istanbul following several attacks in crowded areas, including the deadly assault on the Reina nightclub on New Year’s Eve which left 39 people dead.

Earlier reports stated that the armed man had taken several people hostage.
