Ahmedabad: Anti-terrorism squad of Gujarat police on Monday arrested Mohammad Irfan Qureshi who had been absconding since the 2002 Gujarat roits. He is the main accused in five bomb blasts which rocked various parts of the state in the aftermath of the 2002 post-Godhra riots.
He was nabbed from a village in Shahdol district after receiving a tip-off about his presence there. Queshi had allegedly played a key role in carrying out the multiple explosions in which three persons were killed and scores injured.
According to ATS Qureshi, originally from Bulandeshaher district in Uttar Pradesh had settled down in Godhara and made a living by selling rugs.
After the riots the along with Yusuf Gheeteli conspired to plant several bombs to avenge the killing of muslims in the communal riots and went to Mathura from where he sent various material used to prepare bombs to Godhra by wrapping them in rugs. On returning back to Godhra, he trained the other accused in bomb-making.
They planted and detonated bombs at five places including a bus, a scooter in Mehlol village, one in a bike in Delol village of Panchmahal district and the fifth one inside a bus in Thasra village of Kheda district.
